APAC: Assisting People and Communities
Category: Working with Offenders and Ex-Prisoners
APAC helps people to deal with problems which may have led to difficulties with neighbours and the community.
In the Greater Belfast area, APAC Mental Health service helps young offenders in the community who have mental health or emotional problems. It also supports their families and aims to reduce the likelihood of the young person re-offending. As with other APAC clients this may include linking up with other NIACRO services, but also involves helping people establish or re-establish links with the statutory mental health services. APAC also offers specialised help to women in Greater Belfast, through the Probation Board’s Inspire project. Women under probation supervision, or soon to leave prison, can access a whole range of mainstream services including those which are based in Belfast’s network of women’s centres. NIACRO also links individual women with other services like Jobtrack, Family Links and the Advice Service. The project worker gives participants the personal support that helps build confidence and make changes in their lives. The APAC project is offered through the Housing Executive as part of the ABC (Acceptable Behaviour Contract) process, but participation is voluntary and is independent of any action NIHE may take on the ABC. |
