Youth Employability

Category: Working with Children & Young People who Offend

The Youth Employability programme supports young people aged between 15 and 18 years old, who are involved with the youth justice system, to undertake education, training or employment. It is a partnership between NIACRO, the Probation Service and the Youth Justice Agency.

Many young people on the Youth Employability programme have been excluded from education, are disengaged from training and face barriers when trying to get into employment. They have been involved in criminal activities due to many factors including boredom, peer pressure and a lack of positive role models (We work to help young people overcome these difficulties). A high percentage of them are at risk of offending or re-offending and an average of 60% of participants go onto education, training or employment.

At their initial assessment interview, a young person will discuss their training, education or employment options, and consider an employability action plan. One of NIACRO’s Yoth Employability Officers will give the young person individual support throughout their time on the programme. This could include help with:

  • Making contact with careers service, training providers and potential employers.
  • Information and guidance on training and employment options.
  • Increasing their employability skills.
  • How to disclose a conviction to employers.
  • Preparation for entering training or employment.

The Youth Employability programme covers Greater Belfast, Newtownabbey, East Antrim, Lisburn, North Down, Downpatrick, Banbridge, Craigavon, Armagh and Newry.
