The Independent Representation scheme makes sure any issues raised by the young people are passed to staff and management at the centre. The management will then have the opportunity to make a considered and appropriate response to these concerns. The scheme’s trained volunteers (Independent Representatives) visit young people at the centre on a weekly basis. Their role is to record any issue or requests for information the young person may have. The Independent Representative (IR) will raise the issues with the designated member of staff at the centre. Independent Representative's typically follow up on day-to-day living issues raised during the young person’s stay e.g. quality of food, living environment, use of equipment, use of rewards and sanctions. Any issues raised by the young person are monitored by the NIACRO IR project worker. As part of the monitoring process the project worker will liaise with the relevant management staff in the centre to ensure that any issues are responded to promptly and are addressed as fully as possible. The project worker will also carry out follow up work if any issues remain unresolved. The work of the Independent Representation scheme is very important to the young people in Lakewood, it provides an independent channel for support and is available whenever the young person needs it.
