Independent Visitor Scheme
Category: Working with Children & Young People who Offend
The Independent Visitor Scheme offers a befriending and independent support service to young people who are "looked after" by the Trusts and have little or no contact with a parent or parental figure.
An Independent Visitor is a trained volunteer who meets regularly with the child or young person. Their role is to act as a positive influence in the young person’s life, building a trusting and supportive relationship. The relationship lasts for at least one year, though it can be for longer. One young person’s view of the programme is: “This is a chance to make a new friend and have somebody to talk to about how you are feeling. It also gives you a chance to go places and get out more.” A volunteer says: “I feel as if I am giving something back to the community. It makes me feel good to know I can make a difference to someone who hasn’t got many supports.” The Independent Visitor scheme operates in the Belfast, South Eastern and Southern Health and Social Care Trust areas. Training is provided for all successful volunteers. |
