Independent Visitor Scheme

The Independent Visitor Scheme offers a befriending and independent support service to young people who are "looked after" by the Trusts and have little or no contact with a parent or parental figure.
An Independent Visitor is a trained volunteer who meets regularly with the child or young person. Their role is to act as a positive influence in the young person’s life, building a trusting and supportive relationship. The relationship lasts for at least one year, though it can be for longer. Below are examples of the views of some of the people who are involved in the project: Young Person: “This is a chance to make a new friend and have somebody to talk to about how you are feeling. It also gives you a chance to go places and get out more.” Volunteer: “I feel as if I am giving something back to the community. It makes me feel good to know I can make a difference to someone who hasn’t got many supports.” Social Worker: “The scheme allows young people to establish positive relationships with their Independent Visitor, to talk about things important to them - not necessarily the issues that the Social Worker is required to.” Foster Worker: “It’s a fantastic scheme that both ourselves and our young person have benefited from. It has given the young person stability through some very difficult times and someone to talk to besides ourselves and professionals. More importantly it is somewhere to have fun and to be brought out of himself when things go badly.” The Independent Visitor scheme operates in the Belfast, South Eastern and Southern Health and Social Care Trust areas.
