Criminal Justice Bodies

  • Community Safety Unit

    The Community Safety Unit is the central co-ordinating body for community safety in Northern Ireland.

  • Criminal Justice Inspectorate (CJI)

    CJI is an independent statutory inspectorate with responsibility for inspecting all aspects of the criminal justice system in Northern Ireland apart from the judiciary.

  • Department of Justice (DOJ)

    The Department of Justice (DOJ) is responsible for all policing and justice powers relating to Northern Ireland.

  • Northern Ireland Prison Service

    The Northern Ireland Prison Service is an executive agency of the Northern Ireland Office (NIO). The Prison Service is responsible for providing prison services in Northern Ireland.

  • Prison Ombudsman

    The Prisoner Ombudsman is appointed by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and investigates complaints from prisoners held in Northern Ireland who remain unhappy with the answer they have received from the Prison Service.

  • Probation Board for Northern Ireland (PBNI)

    PBNI helps to prevent reoffending by assessing offenders, challenging their offending behaviour, changing their attitudes and behaviour and thereby protecting the public.

  • Youth Justice Agency

    The Youth Justice Agency of NI aims to prevent offending by children. In doing so, it delivers a range of services, often in partnership with others, to help children address their offending behaviour, divert them from crime, assist their integration into the community, and to meet the needs of victims of crime.

  • Equality Commission

    The aim of the Equality Commission is to advance equality, promote equality of opportunity, encourage good relations and challenge discrimination through promotion, advice and enforcement.

  • Housing Advice NI

    This website has been developed by the Housing Rights Service and aims to provide reliable independent housing advice for prisoners and their families during all stages of imprisonment – on remand, post-sentencing and approaching release.

  • Labour Relations Agency

    The Labour Relations Agency provides an impartial and confidential employment relations service to those engaged in industry, commerce and the public services.

  • Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People (NICCY)

    NICCY’s role is to promote and safeguard the rights and best interests of children and young people.

  • Northern Ireland Office (NIO)

    The Northern Ireland Office is responsible for overseeing the Northern Ireland devolution settlement and representing Northern Ireland interests at UK Government level and UK Government interests in Northern Ireland.

  • Children's Law Centre

    CAJ is an independent human rights organisation that work to ensure the protection and promotion of human rights of all those in Northern Ireland by reference to internationally agreed human rights standards.

  • Extern

    Extern is a charity working with partners, providing high quality, innovative and community based services for people who have complex needs.

  • Nacro

    Nacro works in England and Wales, with young people at risk of getting caught up in crime and with offenders to help them participate positively in society.

  • Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action (NICVA)

    NICVA is a membership and representative umbrella body for the entire voluntary and community sector of Northern Ireland.

  • PACE

    PACE is a voluntary organisation in Ireland working exclusively with offenders and ex-offenders.

  • Sacro

    Sacro aims to promote community safety across Scotland through providing high quality services to reduce conflict and offending.

  • The Nexus Institute

    The NEXUS Institute works across Northern Ireland to respond to the needs of adults who have experienced sexual abuse, violence or rape.

  • Victim Support Northern Ireland

    Victim Support Northern Ireland helps people affected by any type of crime. They provide emotional support, information and practical help to victims, witnesses and others affected by crime. This is a free and confidential service provided by volunteers through a network of local offices.

  • Volunteer Development Agency

    The Volunteer Development Agency is the centre of expertise for the promotion and development of volunteering across Northern Ireland.

  • Women's Aid

    Women's Aid is the lead voluntary organisation challenging domestic violence in Northern Ireland. They strive to create a safe and supportive society for women, children and young people affected by domestic violence. Women’s Aid provides refuge and emotional support to women and their dependent children suffering from mental or physical harassment within the home.
