Public Affairs and Policy Co-ordinator

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. To draft policy papers on specific areas of criminal justice, welfare, housing, community development and other social and economic policies as they relate to NIACRO’s work.
  2. To assist in the drafting of Annual Reports and Corporate Plans, and contribute to the production of NIACRO News.
  3. To manage NIACRO’s consultative processes and to consult/work with other projects across the organisation.
  4. To develop a programme of research, in conjunction with management, to inform and facilitate NIACRO’s development of policy and practice in specific areas.
  5. To develop briefing materials for staff across NIACRO on policies and areas of interest.
  6. To liaise with a range of statutory, voluntary and other organisations to enhance NIACRO’s policy development.
  7. To oversee NIACRO’s website and intranet.
  8. To contribute to the public affairs and communications agenda as required, particularly through work to increase participation.                                 
  9. To supervise and support staff on an ongoing basis, and other trainees, volunteers and students as and when required.
  10. Any other reasonable duties in relation to the job as required by the Line Manager.
Essential Criteria: 
  • A third level degree qualification in a relevant discipline (candidates should demonstrate relevance through their application);
  • At least two years’ experience of drafting policy papers on criminal justice and/or social policy
  • At least one years experience of engagement in Public Affairs
  • Experience of  supporting staff or volunteers;
  • Experience of responding to public consultations
  • Experience of developing research programmes
  • Experience of participating in communications strategies, such as updating websites, drafting press releases, etc
  • Experience of liaison with external stakeholders
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office 2010 applications on a daily work basis (including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher and Outlook.)
  • Evidence of good oral and written communication skills;
Desirable Criteria: 
  • Understanding of the criminal justice system in Northern Ireland;
  • Understanding of the role of the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland; and
  • Awareness of current issues impacting on the work of NIACRO.

Salary: 
£27,394 - £31,288 (Pts 31 – 36, starting at pt 31)
Hours: 
35 hours per week - some flexibility of hours/days of work may be required including evening and weekend work
Pension: 
NIACRO operates a Group Personal Pension Scheme with up to a 9% employer contribution.
Annual Leave: 
25 days per year plus statutory holidays
Trade Union: 
Employees are encouraged to join the Trade Union recognised for the purpose of collective bargaining, which is the Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (NIPSA).
Access NI: 
This post requires that a check must be carried out under the requirements of ACCESS NI enhanced disclosure. This will involve a full criminal records check which will show spent and unspent convictions, cautions, cases pending or any other relevant information.
