Painting a New Picture

Alex is 16 years old when in February 2005 he took part in a Youth Conference. As part of the action plan formulated at the conference Alex agreed to engage with a NIACRO mentor for a period of at least six months.

Billy Eagleson, Naomhin, Alex and Martina Tally

Alex was introduced to Naomhin, his mentor, in March.  They quickly developed a good rapport and a strong relationship based on honesty and trust.  Naomhin challenged Alex’s views on ffending and his outlook on his life and future and general.

Another part of Alex’s action plan was to paint a mural in a local playgroup.  Although he had a strong interest in art already, Alex had no experience of having ever faced or completed a challenge this large before.  He had completed all other parts of his reparation order and this was the only one outstanding. With Naomhin’s help however they soon set to work.  Alex and Naomhin worked hard at the mural over the summer.  Such was the dedication to the task that they worked on the mural together every day for a week in August in order to ensure that it was completed in time for the reopening of the playgroup in September whose staff were thrilled how it had turned out.

During his time with Naomhin Alex also gained a part-time job and started a course in brick-laying in September.

Alex can be rightly proud of the progress he made since his Youth Conference as can Naomhin of the support she gave him.  It is perhaps testament to this that Alex felt he no longer needed a mentor and wanted Naomhin to give her time to helping another young person who has found themselves in a similar situation to himself.
