I have been a volunteer with the Independent Visitor Scheme for the past two years. Having completed my studies, I saw volunteering with the IV Scheme as a chance to gain some much needed experience, as well as a worthwhile opportunity to support a young person in the Care System.
I was matched with a boy age 14 years who lived in foster care and has very limited contact with his family. We meet up for a few hours each fortnight and together we choose fun activities to do like ice skating or bowling, sometimes we just go for a walk or a coffee and a chat. The young person really seems to look forward to our outings and appreciates the time we spend together, which gives him a break away from his busy foster home.
During our time together the young person moved to residential care a bit further away, but I’m still able to visit. He truly appreciated a familiar face checking in with him during this time of change.
I have learnt so much and enjoy meeting up with the young person. Support and supervision with the project worker has also helped me see the difference I’m making. My volunteering has always been appreciated, which means a lot.
