Prior to his retirement Jimmy was employed by the British Post Office Corporation as a senior manager in the fields of Human Resources management, internal audit, operational management and public affairs. He was also Secretary of the Northern Ireland Post Office Board for twelve years. Jimmy was a member of the Board of Visitors for the Maze Prison from 1993 to 2000. He was a member of the Independent Monitoring Board for Hydebank Wood Prison & Young Offenders Centre from 2002 to 2010, including three years as chairman. Currently he is a member of the Independent Monitoring Board for Maghaberry Prison. Jimmy is also a member of the Northern Ireland Fair Employment Tribunal and Industrial Tribunals and a lay member of the Pharmacy Practices Committee of the Northern Ireland Health & Social Care Board. He was previously a trustee of Mediation Northern Ireland, a General Commissioner of Income Tax and chairman of the board of governors of Clarawood Special School Belfast.
